Smart materials are one of the technologies that are being used to develop different types of actuators. They have characteristics that allow them to be used directly as acting materials or sensing materials; they do not need an extra mechanism to adequate themselves to an actuator or sensor. The following work will focus on how a Magnetic Shape Memory Alloy can be included into a design of a linear actuator. Magnetic Shape Memory Alloys are smart materials which change their shape in presence of an external magnetic field. They rely on the nagnetic anisotropy of their basic lattice configuration. Mathematical models, data acquisition programs, and finite element simulations were made to characterise the actuator described on this thesis. | |
